On Sunday, July 4, Dr. Honora Chapman, Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities and Dr. Veena Howard, professor of philosophy and the first endowed chair in Jain and Hindu dharma, gave a brief presentation about the new chair and the importance of Jain and Hindu history, art, philosophies and traditions and their excitement about the upcoming programs at Fresno State at the 21st Biennial JAINA Convention. Dr. Veena Howard will teach her " Cultural Diversity Literacy: South Asian Traditions in the Central Valley" (Phil 165T) course in Fall 2021. This 3-unit intensive course provides the participants with a basic literacy of the four religions that originated in India, known as Dharma Traditions. More specifically, the course focuses on the study of history, religious beliefs, philosophy, ethics, rituals and organization of Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. While examining the complex systems of doctrines, myths, and religious rituals of these traditions, we will also explore the historical development of these traditions and cultural literacy.
